Welcome to another issue of The Green Thumb Times.

Did you know that garlic has much more going for it than flavoring for cooking? We'll take a quick look.

We also give you our normal dose of quick tips.

As always, if you do have questions, suggestions or ideas, do not hesitate to drop me a note. If we do start to get questions from our readers, we'll start a reader questions section.

2) Garlic

Garlic are plants which possess some of the qualities of food and some of the properties of drugs. They are considered as a well known culinary and medicinal herb. They have been used for thousands of years to treat wounds, infections, tumors, and intestinal parasites. In addition, this pungent plant is a common ingredient of soups and stews.

Modern scientific research confirms these ancient uses for garlic, including the ability to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Increased levels of cholesterol and triglycerides is considered one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Garlic’s sulfur containing compounds, which lend the herb it’s pungent, spicy aroma, are responsible for many of its healing properties.

Garlic also possesses the ability to inhibit the growth of parasites in the intestines, including amoebas which cause dysentery. Amoebic dysentery is a potentially serious condition which requires medical treatment by a doctor.

This amazing herb has also demonstrated the ability to protect against a variety of environmental toxins. It is also responsible for garlic’s often unwanted aroma especially if you don't want to make your breath smell!!!

Recently I saw a large "bumper sticker." It read "EAT GARLIC – ITS CHIC TO REEK"

3) Humor for Today

On a visit to the library I happened to notice a man and a woman, both deaf, signing with intense gestures, apparently in a heated debate.

The man said something, and the woman seemed upset. She started signing her reply very fast, to the point where the man couldn't understand a word; she also signed in big, wide gestures, which is the equivalent of volume.

Finally, looking strained, her companion took her hands, "silencing" her. The he signed, very small and slowly, "You don't have to shout, I'm not blind."

4) Repotting Tip

Here is an interesting tip I recently picked up.

Too often when we water our house plants we end up with soil escaping the bottom of the pot, along with the excess water. The next time you repot that plant, why not take a used dryer sheet and place it at the bottom. Hey, a little bit of lint could do the trick, as well.

5) Cooking Tip: Interesting Grill Cheese

We all know how to make that ever popular staple, the grilled cheese sandwich. But have you ever considered marrying it with olive oil?

For a change of pace, try grilling your cheese sandwich in olive oil instead of butter. Besides being better for you, it is much more flavorful. If you are using a non-stick skillet you don't need to use much oil -- less than a tablespoon per sandwich should do the trick.

First heat the pan, pour in the oil, swirl it around, and proceed with grilling as usual. The best tasting grill cheese done with olive oil is to use sharp cheeses, such as extra-sharp cheddar or asiago.

6) Droopy Houseplants

It's that time of year when houseplants start to look a little sickly. How are your houseplants looking? Are they starting to drop leaves, or getting a bit spindly and pale? This may be caused from not getting enough light, which is a common problem when houseplants are moved back indoors for the winter.

Why not move the plants closer to a south or west-facing window, or perhaps give them several hours of fluorescent light each day to help supplement natural light.
