1) Editor's Comments:

This week we conclude our two-part article on chrysanthemums. Since we have included a number of graphics, to see them you will need to be connected to the Internet when you read the message, or visit the issue on-line. We do this to help keep down the file size of the issue so it doesn't take too long for you to download the issue..

Over the past weeks we have been getting quite a few bounced newsletters from folks with full mailboxes. As a result, we have been forced to remove some subscribers whose issues have bounced five weeks in a row. Remember to keep those mailboxes clear and you won't miss an issue.

As always, if you do have questions, suggestions or ideas, do not hesitate to drop us a note.

2) Chrysanthemums (Part II):

MumsMums are not entirely winter hardy in areas that have a "hard freeze." If you are willing to spend a little extra time with them in late fall, chances are very good that they will most generally survive in zones three and four.

It is not unusual that in late fall "Old Mother Nature" will get lazy and forget to dump some moisture on the ground. Unfortunately, if there is a lack of moisture, Mums may have a hard time surviving through the winter months.

My suggestion, on or about September 1, is to water your Mum plants at least once a week to make sure they have plenty of moisture during the winter months. Even though the ground might be frozen, your Mums still need that moisture. After the Mum plant freezes you should cover the plants with straw or hay.

If you feel the urge to remove the brown frozen plant material, I suggest you just remove the tops of the dead plant. However, consider that the Mum plant has hard stems, and as the snow falls around your garden, those stems will catch the snow and allow it to drift around the plant. As a result, when the snow melts in the spring, the drifts will help to retain the moisture around the roots -- it will also help to protect your plant from a freezing and thawing cycle.

There are literally hundreds of Mum cultivars to choose from, and I always have a difficult time choosing the type and variety I would like to grow. In spite of this I always choose at least one group of Button Mums and a few of the Stadium Queens, a decorative "Football Mum" for "homecoming!"

Button MumsThe Button Mum creates a multitude of cream colored flowers that are generally the first to bloom in early fall. They are most often a domed plant with hundreds of cream colored flowers. When they start blooming, you know it will soon be fall.

Stadium MumStadium Queen is the largest Mum flower, and it is very easy to grow. You can grow this flower by a process known as disbudding the plant. It will only produce one very large terminal flower on a stem --you simply remove all other buds from the plant except the bud you wish to flower. You will be amazed by its size and beauty.

Please give chrysanthemums a try. You won't be disappointed.

3) Humor for Today:

At a garden party given by a wealthy woman, two gardeners were working on the back lawn. One of the guests watched as the gardeners worked. While one gardener was busy weeding a flower bed, the other gardener suddenly began to do a graceful dance, bending over and straightening again as he moved around the other gardener.

Enchanted by the ritual movements, the guest told the host, "That man is a very talented dancer! I'd pay him two hundred dollars to demonstrate his dance before my aerobics class!"

The host called the gardener over when he finished his dance and asked him about the offer.

He yelled back to his fellow gardener, "Hey Bob! Do you think for two hundred bucks you could step on that rake again?"

4) World News Network:

Are you a news junkie? Or are you someone that likes to receive their news from more than one source? Have we got a site for you.

On the World News Network site, you can find many, many news sources. You can read news from many perspectives, rather than just from the local newspapers. In fact, there are many folks that like to get their news from many viewpoints so they can better filter fact from fiction.

But at this site you can also read cartoon news, pollution news, many different music genre news, science and education news, genetically modified food news, and much more - many niche news areas that might be of interest to you.

You'll be amazed by what you can find here. Check it out.

6) Plant Trolley:

We've always encouraged folks to give container gardening a try, whether it is for folks with small yards, or on patios, or even for folks in apartments. Unfortunately, if you have tender plants growing in large containers during the warm months, you may think you'll just have to lose those plants when the cold weather arrives.

Why? Because you might not have the space for huge pots -- they're simply too big, too heavy, and hard to move around. Here is a possible solution - why not invest in a plant trolley? These trolleys work great for large houseplants, too, making it easier to find a new home for that beauty.

You can find these trolleys in garden centers or gardening catalogs. If you'd like an on-line source, you can try the Gardener's Supply Company at:

http://www.gardeners.com

They have a galvanized trolley that's built to accommodate up to 150 pounds.

7) Clean that Brush:

Paint CanAnyone that's done any painting knows that in order to get a good finish and to make a paint job easier, you need a good brush. But good brushes are expensive -- this makes it more important that we do a good job at cleaning our brushes properly.

However, if you're like me, you've gotten to the end of a paint job and you rushed to clean your brush. The next time you want to use it, you've got a stiff, dried up brush. You certainly hate to throw it away or go out to buy a new one.

Here is a tip I just came across on how to restore that dried brush:

You can get chemical brush restorers, but I've heard they can be hard on the bristles. Try this -- bring some vinegar to a boil in an old pan that you no longer use for food preparation, reduce to a simmer and submerge the bristles for several minutes. Wash the brush with a mild soap and water. You should have a brush that's brought back to life.

Remember, don't be using that pan for cooking. Move it into the work room or garage.
