1) Editor's Comments:

This week we share some great images and the story of The Christmas Rose; we also want to be sure you don't ignore marigolds as you use cut flowers in your arrangements; of course, we've also included other items of interest. Hope you enjoy.

Two weeks ago we told you about a cute little program called Mousotron. Well, Tom does a lot of work at his computer - the past two weeks his mouse pointer has now traveled almost 16 miles; he's made 60,000 keystrokes; and clicked his mouse 89,000 times. Amazing.

As always, if you do have questions, suggestions or ideas, do not hesitate to drop us a note.

2) The Christmas Rose:

According to legend there is a beautiful story about the Christmas Rose.

There was a young girl named Madelon who was tending her sheep one cold and wintry night. As she watched over her flock she saw a bright and shinny star that appeared in the east. Soon a group of Wise Men stopped by and told her that they were bearing gifts for the new born King. She followed them.

She arrived at the stable where the Baby Jesus lay -- and when the Maji laid their rich offerings of myrrh, frankincense and gold by the cradle of the sleeping Christ Child, legend says that the shepherd maiden stood outside the door of the stable and quietly began to weep as she had no gifts for the Christ Child.

She went out in the fields and fell down and wept. Suddenly an Angel appeared and hearing her weeping, the Angel knelt and brushed away the snow to reveal a most beautiful white flower touched with pink. It was a Christmas Rose.

The shepherd girl laid the beautiful flower at the feet of the Baby Jesus.

3) Humor for Today:

Two little boys are looking for a way to cool off on a hot summer day. Dad won't let them play in the sprinkler because he is mowing the lawn, so the boys set out to find a way to get wet and cool without getting into trouble.

They sit on the curb brainstorming when suddenly one of them jumps up and says "I know, lets get baptized!"

Well, both boys have seen enough to know that you can get wet at a baptism, so they trot down to the church on the corner and tell the pastor what they want.

The irritated pastor finally relents after about 10 minutes of begging and he finally drags the boys to the men's room and dunks them both head first into the toilet, then sends them on their way.

The boys sit on the curb, slightly disappointed with the whole adventure, when one of them asks the other, "What religion are we now?"

"I don't know" replies the other "If we were Baptists, he would have filled up the big tub and dunked our whole body like he did for uncle Jim, and if we were Catholic, he would have poured it on our heads from a pitcher."

They sat and thought about it for a while longer when the first one said in a small voice, "Since he stuck our head in the toilet, I think that it means we're 'piss-ca-palian."

4) Don't Ignore Wiper Blades & Fluid Until You Really Need Them:

Don't you hate it when you really need your wiper blades and washer fluid and you find that the fluid is gone or the blades do a terrible job? Well, don't wait until you need 'em before you think about 'em.

Here are some tips:

Check the windshield washer fluid and keep it full. In colder climates you'll want to use a full strength solution during the winter, and in the spring, summer and fall you'll want to be using it 1/2 strength. (Of course, in some parts of world during early spring and late fall you'll also want to use a full strength solution.)

When you top off the reservoir, clean the wiper blades with a rag soaked with washer fluid. This will clean the blades of any road dirt and debris that accumulates.

Even when it has been dry, you'll want to use the windshield washers occasionally. We've heard that the washer soap can cake up and clog the washer jets. I know I once had a vehicle where the passenger side was clogged and the driver side was lucky to reach six inches onto the windshield. Not fun.

Replace your wiper blades once a year. Don't wait until the rubber wears out and you've got the metal of the holder scratching your windshield.

Using these tips should make your driving safer when you actually need to use the wipers.

5) Marigolds in Flower Arrangements:

Many of us plant Marigolds in our flower beds and borders. But how many of us use them in our flower arrangements? Not many because of their strong fragrance.

Think about the beauty you're missing in those cut-flower bouquets. These are versatile and bright flowers, and they last a long time in water.

Here's a way to use them in your arrangements AND not have the odor driving you from the room. After you cut a batch of marigolds, place them in water with a couple teaspoons of sugar. Keep them there overnight. The next day the smell should be gone and you won't hesitate to beautify your arrangements.

7) Cutting Apples:

We all know that apples will tend to turn brown very quickly after being diced or sliced. Hey, add a small amount of lemon juice (2 teaspoons) to a bowl of water (1-1/2 cups). Simply place the cut apples in the lemon water until served or added to a recipe.

For those that like to dehydrate slices of apple, pear, banana chips, etc., you'll want to use this tip, as well. Your final product will look much more appealing.
