1) Editor's Comments:
While thinking about my college days [Rex], I started
to remember the fantastic Longwood Gardens. Thought I'd share them with
you, as well.
We've included a number of other articles we hope you will enjoy. Also,
we have a great suggestion from Georgina in response to an article last
week.
As always, if you do have questions, suggestions or ideas, do not hesitate
to drop us a note.

2) Longwood Gardens:
When
I attended Ursinus College, Collegeville, PA, I had an unusual and rare
opportunity to visit Longwood Gardens (Dupont Gardens). My memory of this
beautiful corner of earth has hung in my mind all these years.
Longwood
Gardens was created by industrialist Pierre S. duPont. It has 1,050
acres of gardens, woodlands and meadows. It has 20 outdoor gardens,
over four acres of heated greenhouses. They grow over 11,000 types and
varieties of flowers, bushes and trees.
The
gardens are dotted with spectacular fountains. Longwood Gardens sponsors
over 800 horticultural and performing events each year - flower shows,
gardening demonstrations, and even some gorgeous fireworks displays.
It is open to the public everyday of the year - they attract over a
million visitors each year.
I
highly recommend you visit the Gardens. It would really be difficult
to recommend the best time of year to visit, but it would be hard to
beat the beauty during September with their fall gardens.
Longwood Gardens is located outside of Philadelphia - near West Chester:
Kennett Square, PA 19348

3) Humor for Today:
After her husband's checkup, a woman was called into the doctor's office.
The doctor told her, "Your husband has a serious disease. There
are several things you'll have to do for him, or he will surely die.
Each morning, fix him a healthy breakfast. Be pleasant to him. Make
him a nutritious lunch for work, and a especially nice meal for his
dinner at night. Don't give him chores, or that will increase his stress.
Don't discuss your problems with him either. Try to relax him in the
evenings by wearing lingerie and giving him back rubs. Let him watch
his favorite sports on TV. And most importantly, make love to him several
times a week and satisfy his every whim. If you do these things for
the next 10 months to a year, I think he'll pull through."
On the way home, the husband asked his wife what the doctor had told
her.
"You're going to die." she replied.

4) Animal Planet:
Are
you a fan of cable TV's Animal Planet? Did you know they have their
own website?
Take a visit. You'll find out more about all their series, be able
to explore different animal topics, including an online reference, guides
for dogs and cats, view some live cams, and a fun and games section.
One of the links on their home page, dog breed selector, appears to
be broken. Personally, I'm sorry to see that because I'm a big fan of
selecting a new dog based on a breed's traits and tendencies. But don't
let this stop you from visiting.

5) Terra Cotta Pot Deposits:
If
you use terra cotta pots for your plants, have you ever noticed an accumulation
of a white crusty substance around the rim? Some might like the look,
but others might think it detracts from the attractiveness of the pot.
Like the look or not, your plants may suffer if their leaves and stems
touch this stuff. The material is an accumulation of minerals absorbed
from water, especially salts. Plant material that comes in contact with
it can wilt or even die. Unfortunately these deposits can be quite hard
to remove from the pots.
The trick is to avoid the build up before it starts. Here is a tip
we just picked up: Place the pot and a piece of a candle in the sun
for an hour or two - this will allow the pot to warm and the candle
to soften; take the candle and rub the rim of the pot to wax it up -
this will seal the terra cotta so it won't absorb the water, and thus
not allow the mineral deposits to form.
Your plants will be happier, and your plants and pots will look better.

6) Quotes for Today:
"It isn't always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes you
have to learn to forgive yourself."
-- (We aren't sure)
"Intellectuals are people who believe that ideas are of more importance
than values. That is to say, their own ideas and other people's values."

7) Healthier Soups:
In
this day and age, we should all strive to reduce the fat content in
our foods. Well, we love homemade soups. Here is a tip on reducing the
fat in your soup.
The first step is to refrigerate the soup overnight. The next day,
simply skim off the solidified fat from the top.
For us, the biggest benefit is that the chilling process will help
blend the flavors - that is why leftover soup always taste better the
next day.

8) Battling Slugs:
Are your hostas being chomped on by slugs, or your roses being eaten
by Japanese beetles? Hey, why not take care of the problem and have
your kids (or unenterprising neighbor kids) make a little money.
Arm them with a can or bucket full of soapy water and give them an
incentive of a dime a bug. Or set the bounty to a level you can afford,
or think is worthwhile for the youth.
With monetary incentive kids can do quite a thorough job. For some
spare change you'll find a lot fewer shredded leaves. If your kids are
really enterprising, they might be able to offer the service to your
neighbors.

9) Reader Follow-up on Apples:
One of our faithful subscribers, Georgina of Emerton Place Garden Nursery
in Lanley, British Columibia, offered the following in response to our
article about keeping apple slices looking fresh:
"I just read your suggestion for keeping apples from turning brown.
You can also use a tsp. of vinegar. But my favorite way of preserving
the color of apples is to buy Ascorbic Acid, in the powdered form, from
the Health Food Store and sprinkle that on them. You get the benefit
of the Vitamin C as well as not loosing any of the flavour into the
water and lemon juice."
"I'm enjoying your news letter. Thanks."
Well, thanks, Georgina, and we enjoy having you as a subscriber.
